Finding Light in the Darkness

by Sarah Mitchell December 30, 2025
I never thought I'd find my way back to faith. After losing my mother to cancer, I was angry at God, angry at the world, and lost in a darkness that seemed endless. For months, I wandered through life like a ghost, going through the motions but feeling nothing. My family tried to help, friends offered comfort, but nothing could penetrate the wall I had built around my heart. One rainy Tuesday, I found myself sitting in the back row of a small church I had never been to before. I don't even remember deciding to go in; my feet just carried me there. As I sat in that quiet space, tears began to fall for the first time since the funeral. An elderly woman sitting nearby simply handed me a tissue and patted my hand. She didn't say a word, but her kindness broke something open in me. In that moment, I felt a presence I hadn't felt in so long - a warmth, a comfort, a love that transcended my understanding. That day marked the beginning of my journey back to faith. It wasn't instant or easy, but step by step, prayer by prayer, I found my way back to the light. My mother's love lives on through my faith, and I know she's smiling down on me.
